International Volunteer Managers Day!  Learn more at www.volunteermanagersday.org

Mission / Statement of Values

We celebrate the profession of volunteer leadership because:

  1. Volunteer Managers have the skills and knowledge to help people be part of the solution in meeting community needs. Even in cynical times, they practice the art of the possible.
  2. Volunteer Managers change lives — both the lives of volunteers themselves and of those served by well-led volunteers. It is a life-changing profession. Volunteer managers provide the leadership and direction that allows people to build a good and just society and to mend the social fabric. Without professional leadership, people’s time, talents and efforts could be wasted.
  3. A well-run volunteer program shows the community, including potential donors, that the organization is not afraid of public scrutiny and involvement and endeavors to make the most efficient use of monetary assets.
  4. Well-led volunteers become an advocacy and public relations force for an agency or program — a force no amount of money could buy.

11/5/2024
Take the next step in your career as a leader of volunteers and become certified in Volunteer Administration (CVA).

Is Everybody Welcome? An Introduction to the Equity in Action Toolkit

AL!VE Academy November 6, 2024  2:00 PM Eastern for 60 minutes

When segments of the community do not feel welcome in volunteer spaces, they may choose not to engage.  The Assessing Diversity and Equity in Volunteer Inclusion (ADEVI) project is a multi-faceted investigation of the diversity of volunteer engagement professionals and the equity journey of organizations they work in. The project's guiding principle is that organizations that are attuned to inclusiveness will be able to engage a more diverse cross-section of their communities. ADEVI is a partnership between Arizona State University (ASU) the Council for Certification in Volunteer Administration (CCVA). The project is funded by AmeriCorps, a federal agency in the United States.

Join AL!VE member Faiza Venzant, Mark Hager, and Teresa Oswald as they take you through the journey of the ADEVI project. This workshop begins with a brief overview of the survey and focus groups that involved many AL!VE members. From there, the presenters will take attendees through the Equity in Action Toolkit. This field-building toolkit consists of resources to help leaders of volunteers apply an equity lens to the various aspects of their practice. It was created by over 25 CVAs (Certified in Volunteer Administration) in the US and Canada.
Learn more about ADEVI at cvacert.org/adevi

We all encounter ethical dilemmas in our daily work with and for community, but rarely do organizations focus on ethics related to volunteer engagement. This session provides an opportunity for practitioners to understand the difference between personal, organizational and professional ethics. The core values and principles identified by the Council for Certification in Volunteer Administration (CCVA) will be shared. Participants will learn a process for ethical decision-making that can be applied in any situation, and then practice this using real-life scenarios related to volunteers. Finally, several specific strategies will be offered for increasing awareness of ethics within an organization and helping both volunteers and staff become more effective at handling ethical dilemmas. Hosted by the Council for Certification in Volunteer Administration (CCVA). For more information, visit https://www.cvacert.org.

Over the last few years, formal volunteering rates have been declining and organizations are reporting sustained shortages of volunteer labour. While efforts to recruit and retain volunteers are ongoing, this session will ask us to consider how organizations can promote Decent Volunteering (as aligned with Decent Work philosophies) and foster anti-oppressive approaches to volunteer recruitment and screening. Come ready to engage as we critique how systems of volunteer engagement exclude, harm, or marginalize some community members and imagine new ways of fostering communities of belonging in volunteer programs.
