National Volunteer Week is an opportunity to recognize the impact of volunteer service and the power of volunteers to tackle society’s greatest challenges, to build stronger communities and be a force that transforms the world. Each year, we shine a light on the people and causes that inspire us to serve, recognizing and thanking volunteers who lend their time, talent and voice to make a difference in their communities.

National Volunteer Week was established in 1974 and has grown exponentially each year, with thousands of volunteer projects and special events scheduled throughout the week. Today, as people strive to lead lives that reflect their values, the expression of civic life has evolved. Whether online, at the office, or the local food bank; whether with a vote, a voice, or a wallet – doing good comes in many forms, and we recognize and celebrate them all.

In conjunction with National Volunteer Week, Global Volunteer Month celebrates the power of people who tackle society’s greatest challenges and build stronger, more vibrant communities through volunteerism and everyday actions as well. Learn more here!

April AL!VE Academy:  Neurodiversity in Volunteerism

Neurodiverse people are constantly navigating a society that frowns upon mental health. This makes it difficult for them to lead independent lives and have fulfilling careers. However, that does not mean that they do not have anything to bring to the conversation, so to say. In this session, we will address how volunteer leaders can make their programs accessible and supportive to neurodiverse volunteers, how to write, post, and recruit inclusive positions, and how to get staff and leaders on board.

Learning outcomes for this Academy:
  • Definition of neurodiversity
  • creating an accessible and supportive environment
  • how to write, post, and recruit inclusive positions
  • how to get staff and leaders onboard
About our Presenter:

Sarah Philippe (she/her) is passionate about volunteerism, accessibility, history, and ice cream. She has been in the volunteerism field since 2015 and loves every minute of it. She earned her Certification in Volunteer Administration in 2021 and has completed certificates in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in the Workplace and Ethical and Inclusive Leadership, both from the University of South Florida Muma College of Business. She has presented Neurodiversity in Volunteerism at several state conferences and professional development webinars. Most recently, she was published in "New Voices and Perspectives in Volunteer Engagement 2023" edited by Erin Spink. In her free time, she likes spending time with her cat, eating ice cream, and playing with her nieces and nephews.

AL!VE Academy Webinars are free for Individual, Agency and Local Association members.  The general public is welcome to attend, but will be billed $25 after attending and will receive a copy of the slide deck, recording, and attendance certificate upon request.  If you registered as a Local association member, please be sure you have listed your local association's acronym or name in the registration.  Learn more about AL!VE membership here.

National Networks COP:
Those working at a national level face different issues than those operating on a local or regional level. Often national level leaders are engaged in big picture, strategic or policy decision-making. Sometimes those operating at a national level don’t work directly with volunteers, but rather help empower others in their organizations who do. Join the discussion to connect and learn from others working nationally. We invite anyone looking to brainstorm around the unique issues facing volunteer leaders on a national level.  This COP group will be a chance to network, share expertise, ask questions, and solve problems with your peers.

*note* When you register, you will be automatically be registered for all the future COP dates (listed below) and monthly reminders will be sent - the COP will use the same zoom link.
