 March & April  Book Club:
Set Boundaries, Find Peace: A Guide to Reclaiming Yourself by Nedra Glover Tawwab

End the struggle, speak up for what you need, and experience the freedom of being truly yourself.

Healthy boundaries. We all know we should have them in order to achieve work/life balance, cope with toxic people, and enjoy rewarding relationships with partners, friends, and family. But what do "healthy boundaries" really mean - and how can we successfully express our needs, say "no," and be assertive without offending others?

Licensed counselor, sought-after relationship expert, and one of the most influential therapists on Instagram Nedra Glover Tawwab demystifies this complex topic for today's world. In a relatable and inclusive tone, Set Boundaries, Find Peace presents simple-yet-powerful ways to establish healthy boundaries in all aspects of life. Rooted in the latest research and best practices used in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), these techniques help us identify and express our needs clearly and without apology - and unravel a root problem behind codependency, power struggles, anxiety, depression, burnout, and more.

Facilitated by Brittany McGarry, MA, CVA .  She is a Senior Manager in Volunteer Engagement at the National MS Society. Currently residing in Denver, CO and working remotely full time, she enjoys a good networking happy hour, especially if it’s on a patio when weather allows. With a Bachelor’s degree in Communication from Bellarmine University, a Master’s degree in College Student Development from Appalachian State University and completing her Certification in Volunteer Administration (CVA) in 2021, she thrives on being a forever learner.

National Networks COP:
Those working at a national level face different issues than those operating on a local or regional level. Often national level leaders are engaged in big picture, strategic or policy decision-making. Sometimes those operating at a national level don’t work directly with volunteers, but rather help empower others in their organizations who do. Join the discussion to connect and learn from others working nationally. We invite anyone looking to brainstorm around the unique issues facing volunteer leaders on a national level.  This COP group will be a chance to network, share expertise, ask questions, and solve problems with your peers.

March AL!VE Academy:  Leading From Your Identity  Presented by Jared Peer, CVA
Imposter Syndrome persists in Volunteer Administration for a variety of reasons. One of the biggest reasons is because in volunteer leadership careers, WHAT we DO is inextricably linked to WHO we ARE.

We'll take a deep look at the sort of attitudes and skills leaders of volunteers can cultivate in order to be successful. Your identity, who you are, might just be the most important tool in your volunteer toolbox.

About our Presenter:
Jared has volunteered - and lead volunteers - all his life. He discovered leading volunteers professionally after years of exploring a variety of for-profit, nonprofit, and ministry careers. After leading volunteers at a zoo through the Covid-19 pandemic, he stepped into a role with a local social services organization. He now leads volunteers for an AmeriCorps Seniors program to meet local community needs in East Tennessee.

AL!VE Academy Webinars are free for Individual, Agency and Local Association members. The general public is welcome to attend, but will be billed $25 after attending and will receive a copy of the slide deck, recording, and attendance certificate upon request. If you registered as a Local association member, please be sure you have listed your local association's acronym or name in the registration. Learn more about AL!VE membership at our website.

Take the next step in your career as a leader of volunteers and become certified in Volunteer Administration (CVA).

Leaders in non-profit organizations and community groups increasingly understand that volunteers can be a critical resource for delivering on a mission. Effective people management and community engagement is imperative – whether they be paid or unpaid. As a result, employers expect that those individuals tasked with mobilizing and coordinating volunteer engagement demonstrate a thorough knowledge of effective practices and an understanding of how to apply that knowledge in support of real-world organizational priorities.

April AL!VE Academy:  AI: How to Have Ethical, Accurate, Human-Centered Results Presented by Dana Litwin

Monday, April 8 - 2:00 PM Eastern, 90 minutes

"AI" aka "Artificial Intelligence" is a buzzword for apps and software products flooding the market and filled with inaccuracies (it's really "Applied Statistics"), misuse, misunderstanding, and mistrust.

Yes, "AI" helps in tasks with "thinking faster" and can, used correctly, save time and streamline workflows for busy Leaders of Volunteers. Using "AI" responsibly takes intention, strategy, and ethical inputs (human-centered and human-reviewed) to be accurate and useful.

This webinar follows up on the great speakers and points from the 2023 Volunteer Management Hybrid Conference to explore the practical aspects of "How, Where, and Why" for utilizing "AI" ethically in everyday work for a positive and accurate outcome.

Learning Outcomes:
1. Understanding what "AI" is and is not good at doing ("Where/Why" is it best used).
2. Applying ethical and human-centered inputs/prompts ("How" is it best used).
3. Reducing bias of prompts/inputs/outcomes.
4. Recognizing unethical and harmful "AI" uses and applications in daily life and work.

About our Presenter:
Dana Litwin, CVA, is a globally recognized strategic advisor, speaker, and advocate for civic service. Since 2002 she has guided organizations in California's Silicon Valley and worldwide to produce breakthrough volunteer and community engagement programs.

Dana is the creator of the YouTube channel “Priceless Advice with Leaders of Volunteers”, served as President AL!VE, and is a founder and facilitator of the National Alliance for Volunteer Engagement.

She is a popular guest on nonprofit sector podcasts and blogs including "Time & Talent" with Tobi Johnson/VolunteerPro, VolunteerMatch, and Points of Light, and has been featured in the Engage Journal, The Nonprofit Times, The Volunteer Management Report, among numerous other media profiles.

AL!VE Academy Webinars are free for Individual, Agency and Local Association members. The general public is welcome to attend, but will be billed $25 after attending and will receive a copy of the slide deck, recording, and attendance certificate upon request. AL!VE Community of Practice - Mental Health COP

July 13, October 11, January 11 * date change *, 2024,  April 13 2024

Each year millions of Americans with mental illness struggle to find mental health care. Despite the passage of the Mental Health Parity and Addictions Equity Act of 2008, significant barriers remain which keep many Americans from accessing mental health treatment and support. As individuals struggle to access care, a common form of support many turn to are community based or national short term services such as crisis hotlines. With the existence of organizations like The Crisis Text Line and 988, the growth of these platforms and the increasing supply and demand of volunteers to help staff the lines has created a need for professional staff to oversee quickly scaling volunteer bases that are at risk for burnout and tertiary trauma as a result of exposure to graphic and intense feelings of suicide, among other things. Despite these risks, the need and desire to hold space for those in crisis, has created a need for volunteer engagement professionals to navigate creating engagement and community for these amazing volunteers.

Through connection and an open forum, we will discuss how we can best support volunteers in the mental health field in the hopes of creating sustainable and healthy volunteer experiences.
