According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 31% of 35- to 44-year-olds and 30.8% of 45- to 54-year-olds were the most likely to volunteer in 2009.

Volunteer rates were lowest among people in their early 20s (18.8%) and those age 65 and over (23.9%). Those with higher levels of educational attainment were more likely to volunteer than were those with less education.

The Value of Volunteer Time
The estimated dollar value of volunteer time for 2009 is $20.85 per hour.

The estimate helps acknowledge the millions of individuals who dedicate their time, talents, and energy to making a difference. Charitable organizations can use this estimate to quantify the enormous value volunteers provide.

Volunteers Report Improved Physical, Emotional Health
A new survey released today by UnitedHealthcare, a UnitedHealth Group (NYSE:UNH) business, and VolunteerMatch, a national nonprofit dedicated to strengthening communities by helping great people and great causes connect, found that 68 percent of those who volunteered in the past year report that volunteering has made them feel physically healthier.
