Save the Dates: 2023 National Service Trainings

See you in San Diego, New Orleans, Charleston, or online!

America's Service Commissions, in partnership with state and territorial service commissions, is pleased to announce the dates for our 2023 National Service Training regional events. The theme for the 2023 trainings is “Expanding What's Possible.”

Please consider joining us for one of the following events:

  • March 21-23, 2023: West · San Diego, CA · Hosted by California Volunteers
  • May 2-4, 2023: Central · New Orleans, LA · Hosted by Volunteer Louisiana
  • May 15-17, 2023: East · Charleston, WV · Hosted by Volunteer West Virginia
  • June 7-8, 2023: Virtual*

*Unlike in 2022, the 2023 virtual event will NOT be a livestream of one of the in-person events. Rather, it will be an entirely virtual event with all participants and presenters online — allowing for two-way interaction — and sessions created for the virtual space.

The primary audiences for these events are AmeriCorps State program and fiscal staff, state and territorial service commission staff, and commissioners. While not a primary audience, all other streams of national service — including National, Tribal, VISTA, NCCC, Seniors, and VGF — are welcome and invited to attend.

We will update our event website — www.nationalservicetraining.org — as more information, including any health and safety protocols, is available.

The Relationship Between Volunteer Roles and Well-Being | Using Data to Create Mutually Beneficial Position Descriptions
Presented by Courtney Tull, CVA, DSocSci

This presentation discusses the current knowledge regarding the relationship between volunteer roles and well-being. The data highlights why it's important to ensure volunteers are serving in a way that not only matches the mission of the organization but also in a way that is fulfilling for them. I also discuss my data collection techniques from designing my own mixed-methods research study and approachable ways for volunteer managers to collect and use their own data to strengthen their programs.
Learning Objectives:
  • Begin understanding data about volunteering and health.
  • Increase the effectiveness of your volunteer recruitment through detailed position descriptions.
  • Consider collecting data on your own volunteer population in order to better serve them.

About our Presenter:
Courtney Tull is an experienced leader and presenter specializing in volunteer management, community engagement, and social science. Courtney earned the Delaware Service Impact Award from the Governor's Commission on Community and Volunteer Service in 2018 as a result of her AmeriCorps service. She has completed extensive research on the relationship between volunteer roles and well-being and has presented her findings to various audiences across the United States. Courtney recently relocated to Orlando, Florida where she enjoys getting to know her new community, sitting on her balcony to read and look for new healthy recipes, and caring for her guinea pigs.

Information Session - Date: June 16, 2023 at 3:00-4:30pm Eastern time

Link: https://cvacert.org/info/

Take the next step in your career as a leader of volunteers and become certified in Volunteer Administration (CVA).

Leaders in non-profit organizations and community groups increasingly understand that volunteers can be a critical resource for delivering on a mission. Effective people management and community engagement is imperative – whether they be paid or unpaid. As a result, employers expect that those individuals tasked with mobilizing and coordinating volunteer engagement demonstrate a thorough knowledge of effective practices and an understanding of how to apply that knowledge in support of real-world organizational priorities.

National Networks COP:
Those working at a national level face different issues than those operating on a local or regional level. Often national level leaders are engaged in big picture, strategic or policy decision-making. Sometimes those operating at a national level don’t work directly with volunteers, but rather help empower others in their organizations who do. Join the discussion to connect and learn from others working nationally. We invite anyone looking to brainstorm around the unique issues facing volunteer leaders on a national level.  This COP group will be a chance to network, share expertise, ask questions, and solve problems with your peers.

Ethics Session - Date: June 29, 2023 at 12:30-2:00pm Eastern time

Link: https://cvacert.org/ethics/

We all encounter ethical dilemmas in our daily work with and for community, but rarely do organizations focus on ethics related to volunteer engagement. This session provides an opportunity for practitioners to understand the difference between personal, organizational and professional ethics. The core values and principles identified by the Council for Certification in Volunteer Administration (CCVA) will be shared. Participants will learn a process for ethical decision-making that can be applied in any situation, and then practice this using real-life scenarios related to volunteers. Finally, several specific strategies will be offered for increasing awareness of ethics within an organization and helping both volunteers and staff become more effective at handling ethical dilemmas.
